Previous studies in the lab analyzing the patterns of gene expression in human cancer have linked cyclin D1 and the transcription factor C/EBPβ. There are three C/EBPβ protein isoforms—LAP1, LAP2, and LIP—and they are thought to work together to effect biological outcomes. My work involves determining how cyclin D1 engages the three isoforms of C/EBPβ to induce transcriptional induction of cyclin D1 target genes. In addition, guided by the belief that understanding the normal functions of cyclin D1 and C/EBPβ will provide clues into their oncogenic actions, I am determining whether cyclin D1’s C/EBPβ-dependent transcriptional function participates in mammary gland development.

From the patterns of gene expression in human cancer a transcriptional program brought about by the concerted action of cyclin D1 and C/EBPβ can be seen. My work is focused on determining whether the functional interaction between cyclin D1 and C/EBPβ participates in tumorigenesis, as well as normal physiological processes.
